The Healing Sols Podcast
Hello everyone I am Natasha Helfer and welcome to the Healing Sols Podcast.
10 years ago I took a leap of faith and hosted my first podcast interview. It was a personal story where I interviewed a guest who was willing to share what it was like to be a gay man in a heterosexual marriage.. and how as a couple they went through the excruciating process of coming to terms with the reality that their marital relationship was not sustainable. They found themselves in this impossible situation, with several children in tow, mainly because of messaging. Messaging they had received about what it meant to be a “good human”, to be in a “good marriage”… to be found “moral” or “worthy”... to live life the “right way”. This messaging came from their religion, their parents, their culture, and generalized media. What I have found in my work as a marriage, family and sex therapist, is that I’m in the work of helping people become aware of and then heal from limiting, incorrect and even harmful messaging.
Messaging affects our sense of identity, our sense of self and who we should be, our sense of life and how we make meaning of it, our relationships, our relational styles in regards to figuring out conflict and boundaries, our sense of how we can show up (especially sexually or ways that challenge gender identity norms).
I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t been affected by messaging in some way that necessitates healing.
I think people get this…but one of the largest growing groups of people in the United States according to the Pew research center are the ‘nones. I’m not talking about Catholic convents this is a group of people who identity as religiously unaffiliated. The n-o-n-e-s, meaning those who are leaving the more conservative religious traditions. Their reasons have to do with feeling like the messaging is too limiting, not true, and/or even harmful to their well being. Social justice issues, perfectionism, unrealistic expectations and not feeling comfortable with external authorities running their lives are many of the things people report as part of their reasoning. Most of these same people still identify as spiritual or caring about spirituality- whether they believe in god or not. They are interested in leaning into concepts of health, humanity, morality, ethics, and intentional community.
I have spent the last 20 years working primarily within my religious community… I have helped many who either wanted to transition away from the religion or stay engaged in the faith but in ways that are more inclusive, affirming and supportive of mental, relational, sexual and spiritual health. I have received so much feedback in the last few years that lets me know that there are so many, from all backgrounds that struggle with similar types of limiting or harmful messaging that I grew up with.
I want to devote the next decade of my life helping people who are seeking new narratives, healthier story lines, and good frameworks that support them in their goals. Messaging that is supported by the best thinking… the best research… the best practices… the best people…we have available to us.
I want to help you understand where you come from, increase self and cultural awareness… and how negative or limiting messaging has affected your current state of affairs (meaning how you show up for yourself, how you show up in relationships, how you show up sexually and how you show up spiritually - whatever that means to you).
I want to help you give yourself permission to heal and lean into concepts such as health, pleasure and well being and end up in sustainable spaces where you can thrive.
I want to indirectly help your children have better messaging through your shifts and changes towards more life positive approaches.
I want to invite you to a personal, relational and spiritual revolution…
I take a solution focused approach in my work.I find that people don’t just want to talk about their problems, they want to know what to do about their problems and in order to find solutions, we need information.
This is why I love podcasting. It is a way to offer the psycho-educational piece that is often very much a part of therapeutic services. It gives me an opportunity to interview many amazing people who have something of value to share… whether it is their personal story, their professional experience, their research, their art, their resources…you will find a wide variety of guests on this podcast—I am excited to learn from them and I hope you are too.
I’m calling this The Healing Sols Podcast… it’s a word play between solutions: ideas and strategies we want to implement along our healing journey and souls: the beautiful people who share of their energy and experience to help in that process.
